← Technology WikiPP Sediment Filter (Melt-Blown Polypropylene)
A PP sediment filter is a melt-blown polypropylene depth filter — the first stage in almost every purification chain, trapping rust, sand, and suspended particles down to 1–5 microns.
How it works
- Melt-blown PP fibers form a gradient-density matrix: coarser outside, finer inside (depth filtration).
- Common ratings: 1, 5, 10, 20 microns — 5 micron is the standard pre-filter for RO systems.
- Protects downstream carbon and RO membranes from particulate fouling.
- Standard 10-inch x 2.5-inch size fits all universal housings.
Key specifications
| Micron ratings | 1 / 5 / 10 / 20 um |
| Standard size | 10" x 2.5" |
| Material | Food-grade polypropylene |
| Typical lifespan | 3–6 months |
What buyers and QC should check
- For QC: check for fiber shedding (rinse test) — cheap PP filters shed fibers that foul RO membranes.
- Verify food-grade certification for drinking-water use, not just industrial grade.
- Replacement cycle depends on feed turbidity; set expectations by water source, not by calendar alone.

1 micron or 5 micron — which should I use?
5 micron is the standard pre-filter for home RO systems. 1 micron is used where finer protection is needed, but it clogs faster.
