← Technology Wiki10-Inch Universal Filter Housing
The 10-inch filter housing (standard 10" × 2.5" sump) is the industry-universal cartridge vessel — any standard 10-inch sediment, carbon, or specialty cartridge from any supplier fits, which is what makes "no lock-in" possible.
How it works
- A cylindrical sump (usually polypropylene or reinforced SAN) holds a drop-in cartridge; water flows outside-in through the media.
- Head caps use standard 1/4" or 3/8" NPT/quick-connect ports.
- The "universal" claim rests on dimensional standardization: 9.75" cartridge length, 2.5" diameter — honored by virtually all media manufacturers.
- Double O-ring seals are the norm for leak prevention at line pressure.
Key specifications
| Standard size | 10" × 2.5" (9.75" cartridge) |
| Common ports | 1/4" / 3/8" NPT or quick-connect |
| Max pressure (typical) | 90–125 PSI (check spec sheet) |
| Materials | PP or reinforced SAN sump |
What buyers and QC should check
- Verify burst-pressure test data for the housing — it is the part that sees full line pressure 24/7.
- For 'universal' claims: test-fit cartridges from at least two independent suppliers before approving the BOM.
- Transparent vs opaque sumps: transparent allows visual inspection but can grow algae in sunlight — specify per market.

Will any brand's 10-inch cartridge fit?
Yes, if the housing follows the dimensional standard (9.75-inch cartridge, 2.5-inch diameter) — which is why universal housings break vendor lock-in on replacement filters.
What pressure can a 10-inch housing handle?
Typically rated 90–125 PSI maximum. Always confirm the spec sheet and ask for the hydrostatic test report — CWS pressure-tests housings to 500 PSI as part of staged QC.
